Armenian BBQ Khorovats

Why Armenian BBQ (Khorovats) is Unique

January 12, 2025 | Cuisine

When you think of BBQ, you might think of American ribs or smoky brisket. But in Armenia, BBQ—or Khorovats—is a religion. It's not just about cooking meat; it's a ritual of gathering, marinating, and celebrating.

At Rincon Armenio in Playa de las Américas, we prepare our Khorovats using traditional methods passed down through generations. Big chunks of pork, lamb, or chicken are marinated in onions and mild spices (never vinegar!) to preserve the juices, then grilled over hot coals on metal skewers (shampours).

The result? Juicy, tender meat with a slight char that pairs perfectly with freshly baked Lavash bread and grilled vegetables. It's a must-try for any food lover visiting Tenerife.

Walking into an Armenian restaurant for the first time can be overwhelming—in a good way! The table is usually overflowing with plates. Here are 5 dishes you strictly cannot miss:

  • Dolma: Grape leaves stuffed with a savory mix of rice and ground meat, served with yogurt garlic sauce.
  • Khachapuri: While Georgian in origin, this cheese-filled bread is a staple at our table.
  • Lavash: The paper-thin unleavened bread that acts as your utensil.
  • Borscht: A rich, beet-based soup that warms the soul.
  • Honey Cake: A multi-layered dessert that melts in your mouth.
